AVON, OH – As the Frontier League opened its 34th season this past weekend, players f rom two of the longest tenured members dominated the action to earn the first 2026 weekly awards. Opening night in Evansville’s Bosse Field is always special, and this season the event created history. After appearing only in relief during his first two professional seasons, left-hander Grif Hughes earned the opening day nod and responded with a dominant performance. Hughes held the Florence Y’alls hitless in his six innings of work, striking out eight batters while allowing only one walk. Teammates Nolan Thebiay and Junior Cerda continued the strong work, giving the Otters the earliest no-hitter in Frontier League history. Hughes is with the Otters for his third season. Originally signed out of Carson-Newman University in 2024, Hughes made 49 relief appearances for Evansville in 2024 and the first month of 2025 before being acquired by the Toronto Blue Jays.

AVON, OH – As the Frontier League opened its 34th season this past weekend, players f rom two of the longest tenured members dominated the action to earn the first 2026 weekly awards.  Jeff Liquori had a strong opening night, hitting two home runs for the Washington Wild Things. Liquori reached base in all four of Washington’s games and added a league-leading third home run against Joliet on Saturday. Liquori ended the first weekend of the regular season tied for second with a 1.000 slugging percentage and fifth with his 1.412 OPS. Liquori returns to Washington after appearing in 85 games for the Wild Things in 2025. He finished third on the team in doubles (17), home runs (9) and RBI (50) last season. Liquori posted double-digit home run figures during his final three seasons of college baseball and was named First Team Sunshine State Conference while at Florida Southern.

Opening Weekend came to a close Sunday with more offense, walk-offs, and statement performances around the Frontier League. The Sussex County Miners once again delivered late-game heroics at Skylands Stadium, while Ottawa and Québec combined for 25 runs in one of the wildest games of the young season. Elsewhere, the Trois-Rivières Aigles and Windy City ThunderBolts split a doubleheader in Crestwood, highlighted by a dominant shutout win from the Aigles in game one.

Saturday night across the Frontier League brought more late-game drama, explosive offenses, and comeback victories. The Evansville Otters erased a six-run deficit and walked off Florence to complete the series sweep, while the Ottawa Titans thrilled the home crowd with a ninth-inning walk-off over the defending champion Québec Capitales. In New York, the Boulders outlasted Brockton in 10 innings for their first walk-off win of the season, and the Windy City ThunderBolts capped a four-run comeback with a walk-off victory of their own against Trois-Rivières.
