Washington Wild Things infielder Joe Campagna and Schaumburg Boomers right-hander Kyle Arjona have won this week’s Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. These awards are chosen by Pointstreak, who is the official statistical provider of the Frontier League.
Campagna takes home Washington’s first Player of the Week Award this season. Campagna’s four home runs were the most in the league this week. His nine hits and nine RBIs were also among the league’s best. He was second in the league in batting average over the last seven days, hitting .474 in five games played.
The 24-year-old is in his first full season with the Washington Wild Things. He spent 2020 with the Steel City Slammin’ Sammies—a team of players under the Wild Things’ umbrella during the summer of 2020, and the Skylands Cardinals—who participated in the 2020 All-American Baseball Challenge. Before 2020, he attended and played at Slippery Rock University. He is batting .339 on the season, with twenty-one hits, five home runs, and sixteen RBIs through twenty games.
Arjona is Schaumburg’s first Pitcher of the Week and second weekly award winner this year after Quincy Nieporte took home the Player of the Week award in early June. Arjona tossed a complete-game shutout in Schaumburg’s 5-0 win over Joliet this week. In his nine scoreless innings, he gave up just two hits and one walk, while striking out nine. This is his second complete-game shutout of the year, with the first also being against Joliet in an 8-0 win on June 8.
The 24-year-old Arjona is in his first season in the Frontier League after spending 2018 and 2019 in the Phillies organization. His 3.41 ERA and twenty-nine strikeouts are among the league’s best, and he is tied for second with thirty-seven innings pitched.
