Florence Y’alls utility man Chad Sedio and Southern Illinois Miners right-hander Michael Austin have won this week’s Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. These awards are chosen by Pointstreak, who is the official statistical provider of the Frontier League.
Sedio takes home Florence’s second consecutive Player of the Week Award this season, after Harrison DiNicola won the award last week. Sedio’s twelve hits—including four doubles, one home run, and seven RBIs—led the league this week. He was also at the top of the league in batting average over the last seven days, hitting .571 in six games played.
The 27-year-old is in his first season with the Florence Y’alls, after spending the 2016-2019 seasons in the Detroit Tigers organization. He is right behind his teammate and league leader DiNicola in both batting average and hits, with a .391 average and 34 hits on the season. Sedio leads the league with eleven doubles on the year and is also tied for third in the league with nineteen runs, fourth in the league with four home runs, and seventh in the league with eighteen RBIs.
Austin is also Southern Illinois’ second consecutive Pitcher of the Week Award winner, following Kaleb Schmidt last week. Austin became the first pitcher in the Frontier League to throw a no-hitter this season in the seven-inning game against Lake Erie this week. He pitched seven hitless innings and picked up five strikeouts, while walking just two batters in the 2-0 win. He also pitched two scoreless innings against Schaumburg this week, giving up just one hit and striking out five.
The 27-year-old Austin is in his third season in the Frontier League, spending the 2018, 2019, and a portion of the 2021 season playing for the Washington Wild Things. He also spent two years in the Kansas City Royals organization after playing in college. His 0.46 ERA is currently the best in the Frontier League.
