FLORENCE’S HARRISON DINICOLA AND SOUTHERN ILLINOIS’ KALEB SCHMIDT CLAIM WEEKLY AWARDS

Florence Y’alls second baseman Harrison DiNicola and Southern Illinois Miners right-hander Kaleb Schmidt have won this week’s Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. These awards are chosen by Pointstreak, who is the official statistical provider of the Frontier League.

DiNicola takes home Florence’s first Player of the Week Award this season, which is his first year in the Frontier League. His fifteen hits—including two doubles, two home runs, and seven RBIs—led the league last week. He also led the league in batting average this week, hitting .536.

The 24-year old is in his first season with the Florence Y’alls, after spending the 2018 and 2019 seasons in the Miami Marlins organization. DiNicola currently leads the Frontier League with a .452 batting average and is third in the league with sixteen RBIs. He also leads the league with twenty-eight hits, a .694 SLG, .514 OBP, and a 1.208 OPS.

In his start against Windy City this week, Schmidt pitched seven scoreless innings and picked up three strikeouts. He surrendered only two hits and did not allow a single walk in the 4-0 win for the Miners. Schmidt is the first Southern Illinois pitcher to win this award since Rick Teasley won it in 2016.

The 23-year old is also in his first season in the Frontier League, after spending the last few years playing at Drury University and in the Northwoods League—a collegiate summer league. His 2.25 ERA is currently among the league leaders in the Frontier League in his rookie season.
