In a unique move, the Capitales leaned toward the Southern Hemisphere for the latest signing for next season. Australian pitcher Mitch Neunborn, the 2020-21 Australian Baseball League Rookie of the Year, will travel the globe to make his North American professional debut in Quebec City. The right-hander will join the starting rotation at the start of the season.
In the 2019 and 2020 seasons, Mitch Neunborn posted sparkling statistics in Australia. In 35.1 innings pitched (6 starts), he struck out 38 batters and allowed only seven earned runs (an ERA of 1.78). The 23-year-old pitcher dominated his opponents in every chapter, less than one hitter per inning ended up on the bases while he was on the mound.
“Mitch has the potential to have a very big impact in our rotation. He was dominant in the Australian League in 2020 even though he faced several affiliated baseball players who played there during the pandemic season. Mitch will be very exciting to watch and could become one of the best recruits in the Frontier League this season, commented Capitales’ manager Patrick Scalabrini.
Patrick Scalabrini’s roster is taking shape more and more. Despite his performances in Australia, Neunborn will still enjoy rookie status in the Frontier League, a great deal for the manager who will complete his training soon. Mitch Neunborn will also represent Australia at the Olympic Games this summer.
