McAULIFFE TOSSES SHUTOUT AS MINERS BLANK WILD THINGS

Right-hander pitches five-hitter as Southern Illinois snaps four-game slide

Washington, PA (August 23, 2019) – The Southern Illinois Miners beat the Washington Wild Things on Friday night 5-0 thanks to a dominant performance on the mound from Ryan McAuliffe, who threw a nine-inning, five-hit shutout to help the club snap a four-game losing streak and take the opener of the road series at Wild Things Park.

After allowing a leadoff single to Ryan Cox in the first inning, McAuliffe (6-3) bore down from there, getting a double-play ground ball to shortstop off the bat of J.R. Davis to erase Cox, and start a streak of 12 straight batters retired in the game. In the meantime, after stranding runners at second and third base in each of the first two innings against Washington starter Josh Lapiana (0-4), the Miners’ offense came alive in the third inning.

Gianfranco Wawoe led off with a single and went to second base on a wild pitch, then third base on Jamey Smart’s single. After a strikeout, Taylor Sparks lifted a sacrifice fly to left-center field to make it 1-0, and after a walk extended the inning, Joe Duncan came up big with a two-out, two-run double, pushing the lead out to 3-0 for the Miners. Jarrod Watkins then smacked a single to center field to plate Duncan and make the score 4-0.

The Miners’ final run came home off the bat of Kyle Davis, who blasted an RBI double to center field to plate Smart all the way from first base with two outs in the top of the eighth inning, but the game was in hand by then thanks to McAuliffe, as he allowed just five hits- all singles- with no walks and a pair of strikeouts in the contest, completing his shutout on 117 pitches. It is the second complete game of any kind by a Miners pitcher this season, and the first nine-inning shutout by an individual Miners hurler since June 5, 2016, when Rick Teasley blanked the Lake Erie Crushers at Rent One Park, also coincidentally on five hits in a 5-0 Southern Illinois victory.

The Miners will go for back-to-back wins in Washington on Saturday, August 24, in the middle game of the three-game series and look to clinch a winning record for the 2019 campaign. Frank Moscatiellowill pitch in the penultimate road contest of the regular season for the Miners against Washington right-hander Michael Austin, with first pitch slated for 6:05 p.m.

The Southern Illinois Miners are the Frontier League’s most-successful franchise since debuting in 2007, winning the 2012 Frontier League Championship as well as division titles in 2010, 2014, 2015 and 2016. They have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year award three times since their inception, and also set a new Frontier League attendance record in their inaugural season.
